Nanjing University Held 14th International Workshop on Vortex Matter in Superconductors

Published:2014-01-05

The 14th International Workshop on Vortex Matter in Superconductors was held by Nanjing University from May 22 to 28. Nearly 130 scientists participated in the workshop including over 70 foreign experts.

Nanjing University Executive Vice President Zhang Rong attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. Prof. Zhang Rong said Nanjing University has a long history and the university’s School of Physics has made great contribution to China’s science and technology development. In 2011 Nanjing University inaugurated the Center for Superconducting Physics and Material with the hope that the center could become a window opening to the outside world to promote academic exchanges in the field of physics between China and the rest of the world. Prof. Zhang expressed the hope that participants of the workshop could share their research achievements and promote the research development in vortex matter in superconductors.

Prof. Wang Mu, Director of the National Laboratory of Solid State Microstructures, Nanjing University, briefed the audience on the development of the university’s physics and material research. He stressed that an innovative, equal and free research environment is necessary for scientific research. He hoped this workshop could help build such an environment.

At the workshop banquet the 2nd Abrikosov Prize for Vortex Physics was given to Francisco de la Cruz who has made substantial and sustained contributions to the field of vortex physics.

This workshop continues the tradition of International Workshop on Vortex Matter in Superconductors, which began in 1994. The purpose of the workshop is to promote international collaboration and exchange of ideas in this fascinating field. This is the first time for the workshop to be held in China.
